ABVP wins big

The big win for the BJP-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in the high profile Delhi University Students Union election in which it bagged three of the four posts  - president, vice-president and joint secretary - has engendered a sense of relief in the party. For, as a leader was heard to have remarked privately, if the Opposition's blistering anti-BJP campaign with the active support of sections of civil society had failed to make headway even among the youth of Delhi who have had the maximum exposure to it, this bodes well for the party's prospects in the forthcoming State elections and the 2019 Lok Sabha poll. Barring the post of secretary which was taken by the ABVP's arch-rival and Congress student wing National Students' Union of India (NSUI), the ABVP ruled the roost in the DUSU poll with the Aam Aadmi Party's Chatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti which contested the elections with the extreme Left All India Students Association failing to open its account in the election for university office-bearers.

The ABVP’s 2018 Delhi University win, coming after a major debacle last year where it lost the posts of president and vice-president for the first time in four years to NSUI, reinforces its dominance on the campus and will aid the ruling party as it attempts to build a counter-narrative to the Opposition's anti-BJP/RSS campaign in colleges and universities across India in the run-up the General Election.
