Finally, winter chills are here. If one is to believe theweatherman, there are colder days ahead. ROSHANI DEVI shares home remedies that can keep the body warm

Why is it that some people feel the chills and others don’t? Has it something to do with the kind of food they eat? When we were kids, my mother would always make us eat certain kind of foods and vegetables in winters. That helped us to keep warm even when we were playing out in the cold. Here’s what one can do and eat to keep warm this winter season.

Eat root veggies. While children may not open to eating carrots or white radish, cook vegetables with potatoes. This will help to provide the much-needed energy.

Use as much ginger as you can — in tea or while cooking. Use ginger freely. Using cinnamon, saffron, clove and nutmeg are good choices as well. However, it is important to use these pieces in moderation as many people have a sensitive stomach or are even allergic to them. Check for any allergies before using these.

Use sesame oil on the body. As a toddler, we were given a body massage with this oil. Use the oil before taking a shower. If you feel extra cold, rub the oil on the feet before going to sleep.

There is a reason why amla juice and muraba are available during winters. Eat plenty of it to keep warm.
