10 injured as two groups clash in State capital

Thursday, 20 September 2018 | PNS | Ranchi

At least 10 persons were injured when members of two communities pelted stones at each other following alleged desecration of a religious place in Irgu Toli in Ranchi on Wednesday.

Among the injured were Kotwali DSP Ajit Kumar Vimal, OC Kotwali, OC Sukhdeo Nagar, an ASI of police and two other policemen.

According to police officials three days back some youths were found allegedly urinating before a religious place and were questioned for their action by locals. The youths, however, escaped from the site after the incident.

Furious with the incident, local residents called a meeting on Tuesday and sought arrest of the youths within 24 hours. As the deadline ended on Wednesday people gathered near Sangram Chowk and staged protest against police inaction.

In an ugly turn of events the protest soon converted into a clash between two communities as both sides pelted stones at each other. Additional police force was rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control. Police had to resort to mild force to chase the mob away.

SP (City), Aman Kumar along with ample number of police personnel carried out search operation and nabbed 12 members for questioning in connection with the incident.

The police action in the initial phase step however sparked a protest from the locals, who said that members of one particular community were arrested by the police. Urban Development Minister and Ranchi MLA CP Singh along with dozens of BJP workers sat on a dharna in front Kotwali police station where the arrested persons were kept.

The protest, which lasted for over three hours, ended at around 6 PM after extensive talks with the officials including Ranchi SSP Anish Gupta and ADM law and order Akhilesh Kumar Sinha.

The Minister later stated that during the talks the SSP has assured to take impartial action in the incident. “I appeal to people to maintain peace in the city in view of the Karma and the Muharram festivals,” he said.

“We would take action according to legal provision according to the violators in the incident,” the SSP said. The district administration had deployed a large number of the Rapid Action Police along with three magistrates on the spot to restore calm.

“Peace has been restored in the area. The administration is keeping a close watch over the situation,” said the Ranchi DC Rai Mahimapat Ray in this connection.
