Given books on Mahatma
As many as 17 prisoners have been released from different jails in the State under the Special Remission scheme on the recommendation of the State Government.
According to ADG Prisons Binayananda Jha while the Ministry of Home Affairs asked the State Government to release some of jail inmates on the occasion of 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the State Government released 17, who fulfilled reprievable conditions set by the MHA.
A committee headed by Home ACS Asit Tripathy made the list on the basis of proposal of the Directorate of Prisons.
Before the release, the prisoners were given counseling by a team of experts for their release.
On the day of release, they garlanded the Mahatma Gandhi statue and were given books on Mahatma Gandhi.
Out of 17 prisoners released from jails, three from Cuttack Circle Jai, two each from Koraput Circle Jail and Puri Jail and two female prisoners were from the Nari Bandi Neketan, Sambalpur.
One each from Baripada, Brhmapur, Keonjhar, Balangir, Dhenkanal, Bonaigarh, Deogarh and Champua jail was released
According to MHA guidelines, women and transgender convicts of 55 years age, male convicts of 60 years and above and PwDs with 70 deformities completing above completing 50 per cent of their actual sentence period were included in the Special Remission scheme. Death convicts were excluded.
