As many as 3,817 persons have been killed and 8,718 persons injured in 8,292 accidents that occurred at different places during the year 2018 till September in the State.
Transport Minister Dr Nrusingha Charan Sahoo informed this in the State Assembly in response to a question of BJP MLA Dilip Ray on Friday.
According to the data submitted by the Minister 3,079 persons had died in accidents in 2008, 3,527 in 2009, 3,837 in 2010, 3,802 in 2011, 3,701 in 2012, 4,062 in 2013, 3,931 in 2014, 4,303 in 2015, 4,463 in 2016 and 4,790 died in 2017.
The Flying Squad of the department had collected Rs 488 crore and suspended 82,000 driving licences during the period.
In response to a related question of BJD MLA Bhagirarthi Badajena, the Minister informed that as many as 1,400 persons had died in 3,216 accidents occurred on the National Highway between Khordha and Cuttack during the last five years.
Besides, 1,855 persons were critically injured and 1,159 received minor injuries during the period.
The Minister said various road safety programmes are being implemented to make National Highways accident free as per the direction of Supreme Court Committee.
