3 killed in clash during Durga idol immersion

 Three persons were killed during immersion of Goddess Durga idol while several persons were injured in clashes that took place in half a dozen districts during Vijayadashami celebrations.

In Gonda, a ‘shobha yatra’ was taken out from Katra Bazaar on the occasion of Dussehra on Saturday afternoon. The situation took an ugly turn as devotees participating in the ‘shobha yatra’ waved swords and other weapons as the procession passed through a locality dominated by members from another community. When the devotees started shouting objectionable slogans, the cops intervened to avert any untoward incident. However, as the troublemakers refused to relent, the police cane-charged them. It left some persons with injuries.

Later, the ‘shobha yatra’ was escorted to its destination amid tight police security.

In Karnailganj area of Gonda also, some groups participating in the immersion of Goddess Durga idol clashed with members of another community. Three persons, identified as Sajan Kumar, Rajendra Prasad and Swamideen, were injured in the clash. They were admitted to a hospital and a heavy police force was deployed to check recurrence of similar incident.

Elsewhere, at Kusa hamlet of Jaunpur, a tractor-trolley carrying an idol of Goddess Durga for immersion ran over a seven-year-old girl devotee, killing her on the spot.

In another incident at Pratapgarh, a 15-year-old boy died after falling into a canal near Khuljan Devi Dham. After his body was fished out, the victim was identified as Lokesh of Kautliya locality of Pratapgarh.

In another incident reported from Vikrampur hamlet of Pratapgarh, Anita Singh (35) died when an unidentified person fired his gun during a ‘shobha yatra’ in the district on Saturday.

The bullet hit the victim on her chest and she died on way to hospital.

A clash also took place in Kurebhar area of Sultanpur when devotees tried to take out a ‘shobha yatra’ through a prohibited route.

The situation could be controlled only when senior administrative officials intervened and ensured that the ‘shobha yatra’ passed through the permitted route.

In Badaut locality of Baghpat, two groups clashed during ‘Ravan dahan’ on Dussehra on Friday evening.

The trouble started when some visitors molested two girl students of Digambar Jain College who had come to watch the ‘Ravan dahan’. As the victims raised alarm, some students and staff members of the Ramlila committee assaulted the molesters. This led to a clash between the two groups. However, the police intervened in time and controlled the situation.

Clashes were also reported from Jhandauli area of Agra during immersion of the idol of Goddess Durga on Friday. However, the alertness of the police saved the situation from taking an ugly turn.
