Army continues detonation of missiles brought as scrap from Iran

Monday, 15 October 2018 | PNS | Jaspur

A special army team continued detonations of munitions accidentally transported more than a decade ago from Iran as scrap in the Jaspur area of Udham Singh Nagar district on Sunday. According to sources, with 20 missiles securely detonated on Sunday, the total of such missiles so far has reached 270.

It will be recalled that a 12 member team of the army’s 201 counter explosive device unit from Barabanki had started operation 555 Patrampur on Friday. On the first day it had extracted and safely detonated 220 smaller munitions followed by 30 such detonations on Saturday.

On Sunday, 20 larger missiles were safely detonated in the Fika river area at Jaspur.

A total of 555 live missiles had been accidentally transported as scrap from Iran to a factory in Kashipur about 14 years ago.

Accidental explosion of a missile resulting in the death of one worker in 2004 had led to the discovery of the live missiles.

After this the live munitions had been buried by the administration in Patrampur area of Jaspur in Udham Singh Nagar district.

The task of destroying all the missiles is expected to be completed later this week, said sources.
