Close on heels of the arrest of a Border Security Force jawan for allegedly leaking secrets to conduits of Inter-Services Intelligence and subsequent arrest of a BrahMos Aerospace engineer on similar charges, an Indian Army soldier was detained in Meerut on Wednesday for leaking sensitive information.
The armyman was picked up, reportedly by Military Intelligence (MI), for questioning on the suspicion that he provided sensitive information to Pakistan-based intelligence operatives through social media.
The armyman, whose identity was not immediately disclosed, has been posted with Signal Regiment in Meerut for the last two years.
Investigation by MI is in progress, said an official source.
The armyman is being grilled to find out whether confidential inputs on Western Command have been leaked through social media, according to a defence official.
When contacted, IG (ATS) Aseem Arun refused to give any details, saying that his team was not involved in the arrest.
Earlier this month, BrahMos Aerospace engineer Nishant Agarwal was arrested in Nagpur on charges of spying and brought to Lucknow for interrogation. The operation was carried out jointly by Anti-Terrorists Squad of Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.
After his interrogation, ATS officials said that Agarwal was in touch with suspected Pakistani intelligence operatives through two Facebook accounts — in the name of women — operated from across the border.
Prior to that, a BSF jawan was held for walking into a honey trap and subsequently leaking secrets to ISI operatives.
