BJP to select candidates through ‘secret ballot’

Tuesday, 16 October 2018 | Staff Reporter | Raipur

The party observers appointed by Chhattisgarh unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has adopted a novel method to access the sentiments of ground-level party workers and office-bearers in 90 State Assembly constituencies.

The party had appointed its observers in two to three for each State Assembly constituencies. They were then asked to visit and  gauge sentiment of district-level leadership regarding the list of candidates being prepared by the party. They were also briefed by the party on tips as to how to seek the suggestions from the party workers and office bearers.

The first phase of filing of nomination would commence from October 16 after the notification to be issued for 18 Assembly constituencies.

According to senior BJP leader and Chhattisgarh State Industrial Development Corporation (CSIDC) Chairman Chagan Mundhra, one of the observers, said during the meeting three names of candidates were sought. But most of the party leaders were unable to provide the name. So, the secret ballot paper mode was adopted in all the 90 Assembly constituencies to avoid any uproar or dissatisfaction that party workers’ voice was not heard.

All of them were asked to write the name of candidates they consider should be made the candidate, in series, as preference of first, second and third. After the observers signed the paper, it was put in the ballot boxes.

Mundhra said it was a simple mode adopted so not much hype was created and the meetings of observers with party workers also ended early. All the observers had submitted their respective boxes to State party headquarters. The votes are being counted, he said. The list would be finalised based on the voting, he added.

Meanwhile, party sources said that a team would leave for New Delhi with the list.

The Election Committee meeting of BJP is scheduled on October 18 in New Delhi. Committee would declare the names and it is expected that BJP will release its first phase list by October 20-21.
