The post- mortem report of the 20-year-old elephant which had died on Thursday revealed that it had been shot at. Earlier, the foresters had hinted that the elephant might have died of natural cause. A bullet has been found in the carcass of the pachyderm, as per the post- mortem report. The body of the tusker had been found on Thursday morning near Hazargrant village under Haridwar forest division.
Speaking to The Pioneer, the divisional forest officer (DFO) Haridwar Akash Verma said, "The post- mortem report has revealed that the elephant was shot dead. Subsequently, a case has been registered under the Wild Life Protection Act. The bullet was shot from an unlicensed firearm. We have thus sought assistance from the police to identify the firearm and the person who possesses it.”
DFO further said that a part of the bullet had been found lodged in the body of the elephant.
“A single fire was shot from the country- made firearm,” he added.
