Child marriage rate 21.3% in State

Monday, 19 November 2018 | PNS | BHUBANESWAR

Poverty, lack of education, cultural practices, and insecurity fuel and sustain the practice are among the many reasons behind child marriage.

In Odisha, about 21.3 per cent of girls are getting married before the legal age of marriage (18 years) as per the NFHS-4 data, 2016. The situation is quite threatening as it poses a serious threat to the future generation as well.

Keeping this in view, the ActionAid in collaboration with the Girls Not Bride,  organised a consultation here on Saturday.

Former Chairperson of Odisha State Commission for Protection of Child Rights Kasturi Mohapatra said civil society organisations’ intervention is highly essential to develop a proper convergence to end child marriage.

Among others, Odisha State Commission for Protection of Child Rights  Chairperson Sandhyabati Pradhan and Member Harihar Nayak, State Commission for Women Member Snehanjali Mohanty and ActionAid  regional manager Sasmita Nanda and Girls Not Bride members Shripra Jha and Divya Mukunda spoke on the theory of ‘Change on Child Marriage’.
