CM pitches for ‘One Country One Election'

Pitching for simultaneous elections for three-tier Panchayati raj system, State Assembly and Parliament, the Chief Minister, Trivendra Singh Rawat said that time, money and energy would be saved if all the elections are held at the same time. He said this while addressing a conclave of the newly elected representatives of the students unions of colleges and universities at his residence on Saturday.

CM said that if ‘One Country, One Election’ concept is adopted simultaneous elections of gram pardhans, chhetra panchayat representatives, block pramukhs, MLAs and MPs would be held which would be beneficial for the country.

Expressing his happiness over a large representation of females among the office-bearers of the student unions, CM said that the women must come out strongly against injustice, exploitation, violence prevailing in the society. 

While citing the single- day student union elections held across the State, he said that Uttarakhand has set up an example in the country. “This is an example which should be emulated by all. Now we have to seriously deliberate on ‘One Country, One Election’ in the country,” he said.

Rawat exhorted the student leaders to engage in works like environmental protection, tree plantation and polythene- free colleges campuses. “Besides, you must engage yourselves in removing illiteracy. The society looks forward to your participation in other creative social causes,” he said.

CM reminded the student union leaders of the pledge of the State Government to make Uttarakhand completely literate by 2019. “The college students have an important role to play in achieving the target,” he added.

The Minister of State for higher education, Dhan Singh Rawat said that the Union Government has provided a sum of Rs 300 crore to 55 degree colleges of the state for bettering infrastructural facilities. He claimed that 76 degree colleges would be shifted to their new buildings soon. The Minister further said that academic calendar of 180 days of classroom studies is being strictly followed in the state and the examinations would be conducted by June 30. He further announced that an anti-drug campaign would be launched in the colleges soon.

Among others present on the occasion were the additional secretary higher education, Iqbal Ahmed besides senior officers of the education department.
