Cong eyes first-time voters

Saturday, 13 October 2018 | Preetam Srivastava | Lucknow

After launching several programmes to woo Dalits and Other Backward Classes (OBC) voters in Uttar Pradesh, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi now plans to attract the first-time voters to improve the party’s showing in the 2019 Lok Sabha election.

The Congress has decided to launch a 90-day drive in this connection on the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31.

“Teams of Congressmen comprising office-bearers of state and district units and party workers will go door to door right up to village level across the state to find out the first-time voters,” said UP Congress general secretary Vinod Mishra.

Giving details of the programme in Lucknow on Friday, Mishra said that Rahul Gandhi had chalked out a 90-day drive to spread the party’s base right up to the village level and it would commence on October 31.

“After identifying the first-time voters and also those who could not vote in 2014 as their names were not in the voters’ list, Congress leaders will help them get their names enrolled in the electoral roll and help them in getting voter identity cards. They will then be convinced to enrol themselves with the party’s ‘Shakti App’ so that they could know about the party’s programme and policies and also its ideology. This will help them in differentiating between the Congress and other parties,” he said.

“Once they register with the app, Rahul Gandhi will directly interact with a select few through video conferencing,” Mishra disclosed.

The Congress leader further said that during interaction with the public, the Congress leaders would also try to know their priorities and what they wanted to be incorporated in the Congress manifesto ahead of the 2019 parliamentary election.

Later, the result of the interaction will be sent to Congress chief to be considered while drafting the manifesto.
