Congress MP from Ludhiana Ravneet Singh Bittu on Sunday demanded that the role of Sikh hardliner Baljit Singh Daduwal and others, who follow his ideology, should be probed in relation to the attack on a particular sect’s Bhawan at a village in Amritsar district.
Offering condolences to those who have lost family members in the incident, Bittu called it an attempt to disturb peace in Punjab. Bittu was speaking to the media persons on the sidelines of a function in Ludhiana.
“The desecration of Guru Granth Sahib was also carried by people who do not want Punjab to flourish. Some Khalistan sympathisers like Baljit Singh Daduwal are doing petty politics over this sensitive issue and it is now a proven fact that he is getting funds for carrying out such dubious activities from abroad. The Congress government in Punjab is keeping a close watch on the activities of all such persons,” said Bittu, grandson of former Chief Minister Beant Singh who was assassinated in 1995 by the militants.
At the same time, Bittu said that no person would be allowed to disrupt peace and communal harmony of Punjab. Whosoever tries to do so would be dealt with strongly, he added.
He said that the attack on the sect’s Bhawan is a “cowardly act” and strongly condemned it. He also appealed to the people of Punjab to maintain peace in wake of this incident and urged them not to panic and to remain calm.
“It is a reprehensible act of violence and we will not let the forces of terror destroy our hard earned peace,” he said.
