Leader of Opposition in Punjab Assembly, Harpal Cheema on Saturday alleged that the Capt Amarinder Singh government has "looted" Panchayat Samiti and Zila Parishad elections with "unbridled use of muscle power and government machinery".
Cheema alleged that Police, administration and election commission has worked for Congress as if they were its cadre. "It is not the loss of opposition parties rather people and democracy have lost the battle," he said in his statement.
The Leader of Opposition said perhaps this is first instance in the history of Punjab when goons of the ruling party have unleased a terror right from the beginning of Panchayat Samiti and Zila Parishad elections upto the announcement of results. It is undoubtedly left a blank spot on the democracy of Punjab.
"Inspite of all this Aam Aadmi Party is thankful to all those Punjabis who showed courage to keep the lamp of democracy alight amid the anti-democracy storm launched by the ruling party and gave a befitting reply to Congress by defeating its candidates at many places," he said, adding the government machinery worked alike Congress workers and at many booths 60 to 70 votes were rejected.
Cheema said that had the Capt Government fulfilled its promises made to the public there would have been no need to highjack the democratic system.
