Saturday, 17 November 2018 | Staff Reporter | NEW DELHI

Rahul Anwar (24) the main accused behind the killing of a 53-year-old fashion designer Mala Lakhani in her upscale bungalow at Vasant Kunj Enclave was once helped by her to get out of jail after he was arrested on molestation charges in 2017.

Talking to The Pioneer, Arti Sharma sister of Mala, who lives in Gurugram said Mala used to call Anwar baccha. “He was arrested in 2017 for allegedly molesting a minor girl in Rangpuri Pahari area when her sister got him out of the case. I still remember the day she talked to lawyers and people just to get him out of the case,” Arti said in hush tone, adding it is difficult for her to believe that he killed her sister.

The deceased used to run a boutique Tulsi Creation in Green Park where the accused Anwar was working as a tailor.

Arti said Anwar wanted extra money for every cloth he stitched. “They wanted some Rs 50 extra per piece for stitching. Since it was a meagre amount, we would have sorted it. We had never thought they would hatch a conspiracy to kill her over it,” she added.

Accused Rahul was second among four brother and two sisters and he was addicted to alcohol which became one of the reasons for him to be thrown out of the house.

According to neighbours, his father threw him out the house as he didn’t used to take care of his ageing parents and family and used to drink alcohol.

According to police, there were 18 stab injuries on the bodies of Mala and her servant.

The accused Rahul Anwar used to stay at Lakhani’s house where he allegedly killed the fashion designer and her domestic help Bahadur Singh in Vasant Kunj Enclave with the help of his two associates - his cousin Rahmat (24) and his friend Wasim (25) over the issue of unpaid dues.

After murdering her and her servant, they ransacked the entire house and looted cash and jewellery, and fled the spot.

However, around 2.45am they themselves went to Vasant Kunj South police station to surrender. They reportedly told police that they feared that police will trouble their family if they ran away.
