Digvijay going big for Cong poll fortune

Tuesday, 13 November 2018 | Girish Sharma | Bhopal

Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh has entered in State politics in a big way at a time when the Congress is locked in a make or break in Assembly Polls.

Singh, highly respected in the faction ridden Congress has chosen a rather difficult role. Of placating rebels, dissidents and those who are nursing a grudge over denial of party ticket.

For the past 48 hours, Singh is not only active in cajoling the rebels, but also meeting the party workers and addressing them.

Two days ago, in his presence, BJP rebel Shyam Singh Meena joined Congress and declared to support the Congress nominee from Huzur constituency. He is also inaugurating the election campaigning offices of the Congress nominees.

Ironically, Singh had himself declared to his supporters last month that his party’s votes get reduced if he campaigns for it. A video showing this, recorded on October 13, was out on social media in the last week of October.

Significantly, Singh, the two-time former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, has been conspicuous by his absence in the programmes and rallies which Gandhi has been addressing in the state over the last few weeks.

“.. mera kaam keval ek. Koi prachar nahi, koi bhashan nahi. Mere bhashan dene se to Congress ke vote kat-te hai, mai jata nahi” (I have only one job, no campaigning, no speech. When I deliver a speech, Congress votes get reduced, so I don’t go),” Singh is heard saying in the video.

State BJP Spokesman Rajneesh Agrawal told ‘The Pioneer’ that the PCC has officially not authorized Digvijay Singh to address any public meeting. “He realizes (as publicized in a video) that whenever he speaks out, people donot vote for the Congress party. It means that when he is moving in different constituencies of Bhopal and elsewhere, he is trying to reduce the votes of the Congress,” he added.

Agrawal claimed that Singh’s frequent movement would certainly affect the outcome of the elections. Since, he is known as Mr Bantadhar and for his mis-governance, whenever he appears before public, real face of Congress would come to fore, he added.
