The Energy Department’s service provider Enzine Global Company’s Junior Engineer (JE) Priyabrata Mahalik was arrested by police on Sunday on the charge of siphoning off Rs 2 lakh, which he had collected from the electricity consumers.
Mahalik was working in Enzine Global’s Dihasahi office, was assigned the duty of collecting electric bills from the villages under the Jagatsinghpur electric division.
Later, an Enzine Global team after a probe detected that the JE after collecting the consumers’ electric bills did not deposit it in company’s bank account. It was ascertained that Rs 2 lakh was embezzled by him.
Later, the accused JE was asked to deposit the money immediately.However, he deposited five cheques worth Rs 2 lakh issued in the name of two different persons. But the cheques bounced due to insufficient funds in the bank accounts. Then the company authorities asked him to deposit the money immediately or face legal action.
Fearing arrest the JE absconded and didn’t respond to the company’ repeated reminders for the last six months.
Finding no other alternative, company’s project manager Rudra Pratap Das lodged an FIR at the Jagatsinghpur police station. Basing on the complaint, police arrested Mahalik on Sunday and forwarded him to court, informed Jagatsinghpur PS IIC Rajani Kanta Misra.
