Evil torched, Good triumphs

Saturday, 20 October 2018 | PNS | Haridwar

The Dussehra festival was celebrated across Haridwar district with devotion and gaiety on Friday. A large number of people flocked to the grounds in their hordes where the effigies of Ravana were torched, marking the symbolic victory of the Good over Evil. The enthusiastic participation of the children and the youngsters in such functions was a notable feature of this year’s celebration. The places in Haridwar city where the effigies were set ablaze as part of the celebration were Rodi Belwala grounds, Daksh temple grounds, Ramlila grounds at BHEL and Jatwara bridge.

The saints based in the holy city said that though a traditional festival celebrated with fervour and joy every year, it connotes something deeper than the mere torching of effigies. Speaking to The Pioneer, the head of All World Gayatri Parivar Dr Pranav Pandya said, “The battle between Rama and Ravana is eternal and universal. It is going on at all times and climes within and without us. Before killing Ravana in the external world, we have to hunt for him inside our souls and vanquish that too.”

Dwelling on the importance of Dussehra festival, the Matri Sadan founder Swami Shivanand said, “Anyone who lives driven by the senses is Ravana and the one who lives while keeping senses under control guided by the light within is Rama. In course of the nine days of Navratris, one worships the primordial energy embodied as Durga to gain strength to attain Ramatva (godly virtues).”

Celebrated on the tenth day of the Shukl Paksh (bright moon day) in the month of Ashwin as per Hindu calendar, Dushehra also marks the transition from the rain to the winter. It also brings changes in the human body, making the people to eat less and refrain from eating things difficult to digest.

Dr Sunil Joshi of Gurukul Ayurvedic College says that eating fruits and more of fluids keeps one fit during the changing season when the winter is setting in. “Lord Rama personifies control over senses and desires, even in food. This aspect of the festival should not be ignored,” he added.
