Former servicemen place various demands

Thursday, 15 November 2018 | PNS | BHUBANESWAR

The Indian Ex-Services League (IESL), Odisha paid tributes to World War I soldiers and discussed various problems being faced by ex-Servicemen in Odisha at a State-level meeting held here on Wednesday.

IESL State and district functionaries, Rajya Sainik Board Secretary Commodore Lalit Mohan Agarwal and Bhubaneswar ADM Arun Kumar Behera were present. Veteran Group Captain and IESL president Jagadanand Brahma inaugurated the camp.

At the outset, the members observed a two-minute silence as a mark of respect to the dead and injured soldiers, who had sacrificed their lives during WW I, on the centenary occasion of the war. More than 60,000 Indian soldiers had lost their lives in the war.

League general secretary veteran Bidydhar Nayak read out a statement, mentioning negligence and injustice being suffered by Ex-Servicemen of Odisha.

“It is a matter of insult that the State lacks CSD depot despite having four prominent military establishments. An ESM has to spend and run to either Kolkata or Vizag CSD depots to avail services. At the present scenario of highly advanced IT services, this can only be termed as an unwanted and unjustified harassment towards the ESM,” Lamented Nayak.

He expressed anguish over the discontinuance of the CSD services at Angul and demanded that it be re-operated soon.

He expressed unhappiness that State Higher Education Department has reserved one per cent of its 800 posts for the ESM against existing norm of three per cent.

He demanded that the Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Services (ECHS), Bhubaneswar be upgraded to Type 'A' immediately as more than 20,000 ESM and their families are dependent on it.

Veteran Arun Kumar Mahanti proposed that IESL should approach the Government authorities to press forward the demand of reserving adequate percentages for employment into both the Central and State PSUs.

He demanded that a Zila Sainik Board (ZSB) be formed at Bhubaneswar on a priority basis for the districts of Khordha, Puri and Nayagarh.

Nayak said a State-level rally would be arranged to demonstrate and express anguish of the State ESM if demands are not met soon.

ADM Behera listened to various problems and assured to resolve some of them at his level. He felicitated veteran Marine Commando Sidhir Kumar Swain for his excellent rescue operations in the Cyclone Titli-affected areas, Veteran Air Warrior

Prakash Gadnayak for his superb performance in the international field of athletics and grabbing gold medal for India and veteran Marrine Commando Rabindra Kumar Sahu for his excellent social services.

Among others IESL(O) vice-president veteran Samarendra Parija, Dillip Kumar Behera, Haraprasad Dora and Umakanta Mishra were present.
