For residents of Steel City, there's one more reason now to wake up early and head to their nearby parks. A set of new exercise machines are attracting everyone from teenagers to housewives.

In a novel attempt to provide better civic amenities to the people, Jusco, which looks after civic amenities of the city, is converting a dumping land into beautiful parks. Apart from other facilities, these parks come with open-air gym equipment where local people can work out day and night.

“Fitness is moving out of air-conditioned spaces as garden gyms are popping up in public parks and housing colonies. My morning routine was to walk and do some stretching, but now I spend 15 minutes working out on the park gym equipment," said Romesh Dua, a businessman of Sonari.

Free open-air gym facilities have been installed at several parks including recently Kalimati Picnic Spot at Sakchi, New Baridih Park (Baridih) and at Sir Dorabji Tata Park (Northern Town). The open air gym provides free access to a host of fitness equipment such as shoulder rehabilitation device, surfboard exerciser, waist-twisting table, abdominal stretching stand, back massager, elliptical cross-trainer, stretching rack, leg lifter and stepper.

For Gunwant Singh Sethi, a resident of Sakchi, the gym setting brings together neighbours who were otherwise too busy to come to the park. “The park has changed our life. There was a time when youths used to spend hours working indoors to build their health but from now we are able to enjoy the gym at our local parks,he said.

“This is part of an effort to make the city smart and we hope to have support of the people in the future plans. The free open-air gyms will come up soon in other parks too, which are used by large number of walkers both during morning and evening. Similar facilities will come up in other areas which draws large number of fitness enthusiasts in the next few months and is meant to provide fitness enthusiasts an opportunity to use the facilities free,” said an official of Jusco.

The Jusco official informed that the company wants to open more facilities for picnickers, walkers, fitness enthusiasts and visitors of Sakchi and nearby areas of Bistupur, Kasidih, Baradwari, Northern Town, Circuit House, and Jugsalai who otherwise had to depend on Jubilee Park for their needs. This will help to reduce rush on Jubilee Park too.
