Game of poaching, defection starts ahead of ULB polls

Sunday, 21 October 2018 | PNS | Dehradun

As it happens just before any important election, the usual game of poaching and defecting has started in both ruling Bharatiya Janata and the opposition Congress ahead of the crucial urban local body (ULB) elections.

In what can be termed as a setback to the BJP, senior leader and former Dehradun district party president, Jyoti Sajwan and his wife Laxmi Sajwan joined Congress on Saturday. Laxmi Sajwan, a member of district Panchayat, is likely to be the Congress’ candidate for the post of the mayor of Rishikesh Municipal Corporation. The move of the Congress is considered as a master stroke as the Sajwan couple is considered to be influential in the politics of Rishikesh.

Jyoti Sajwan, his wife Laxmi Sajwan and a large number of their followers, joined the Congress on Saturday in the presence of the State Congress chief Pritam Singh.

Speaking to the media persons, Jyoti Sajwan said that the voice of the party workers is not being heard now in the BJP. He said that the workers and leaders are feeling stifled in the party. He, further, said that while sycophancy is reigning in BJP the workers get noticed and honoured in Congress. His wife Laxmi Sajwan said that she would work with the Congress workers for the progress and development of the state.

The Kedarnath MLA Manoj Rawat and Mahanagar Congress president Lal Chand Sharma were among those present on the occasion.

Meanwhile, underplaying the switch of the couple from BJP to Congress, the state BJP spokesperson Devendra Bhasin said that Sajwan had been expelled from BJP last year for anti-party activities.

In another development of the day, Congress leader and three-time councillor Beena Bisht joined the BJP in presence of the senior party leaders, including the cant MLA Harbans Kapoor and Naresh Goyal, on Saturday. Bisht said that frustrated with the Congress’s opposition to the delimitation exercise meant to include many villages within the Dehradun Municipal Corporation limits, she has joined BJP. She said that Congress would pay heavily for its double dealing. Bisht who was a councillor from Sridev Suman Nagar ward said that her main objective is development of her area. Speaking on the occasion, BJP Mahanagar president Naresh Goyal said that entry of Beena Bisht in BJP has enthused the people of her ward. He said that more such leaders would join his party in the coming days.
