A 48 year-old Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Delhi Traffic Police was mowed down by a rashly driven light goods vehicle (LGV) while he was on duty at Rao Tularam Marg in South west Delhi. The incident occurred on Tuesday morning when a speeding truck reportedly hit ASI Jitender Singh and fled the spot.
According to a senior police official, at around 7 am ASI Singh, the Zonal Officer (ZO), along with Constables Pawan, Sandeep and Vijaypal, was on duty between Gurugram station road and Rao Tula Ram Marg when at about 7.41 am, a truck coming from Dhaula Kuan hit the ZO.
“He was rushed to Indian Spinal Injury Hospital in Vasant Kunj where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
Following the incident, the truck driver along with truck was apprehended by traffic staff posted at Mahipalpur.
The accused has been identified as Asfaq (22) a resident of Mewat in Haryana,” said the senior police official.
"ASI Jitender Singh joined Delhi Police in 1988 and had served in Shahdara, East and Southeast districts before being transferred to the traffic unit. He was a native of village Sabga in Baghpat (Uttar Pradesh).
He is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son," the senior police official said.
