Heavy rainfall in parts of Punjab, Haryana

Moderate to heavy rainfall continued to pound Punjab, Haryana and their joint Capital, Chandigarh for the third consecutive day on Monday. The city recorded heavy rainfall of 63.8 mm till Monday evening, according to the Chandigarh Meteorological Department.

In the past two days till 8:30 am on Monday, 128.4 mm rainfall was recorded.

“On an average the city records around 154 mm rainfall in the month of September but in the past three days, it has received heavy rainfall of 192.2 mm rains,” said a Met official.

During this monsoon, the city has recorded 932.4 mm rainfall against normal of 817.5 mm till September 24 thereby recording a surplus of 14 percent, the official added.

In parts of Punjab and Haryana, Karnal recorded heavy rainfall of 142 mm overnight while 38 mm rainfall was recorded till Monday evening. Punjab’s holy city, Amritsar and Patiala recorded an overnight rainfall of 203.1 mm and 69 mm respectively.

Ludhiana and Patiala recorded 57 mm and 86 mm rainfall respectively till Monday evening (8:30 am to 5:30 pm). Haryana’s Karnal received 38 mm downpour till Monday evening.According to the Met Department, Haryana has received 402.9 mm rains against the normal monsoon rainfall of 452.1 mm till September 24, recording a deficit of 11 percent. The neighboring Punjab has received 50.3 mm rainfall against the normal of 475.4 mm rains till now, recording a surplus of six per cent.

Panchkula, Fatehabad and Rohtak in Haryana are witnessing huge rainfall deficit of minus 48 (percent), minus 43 and minus 40 respectively while Karnal district has recorded 43 percent surplus rainfall till now during monsoon.Similarly in neighboring Punjab, Ferozepur and Mansa have recorded huge rain deficit of minus 73 and minus 56 respectively while rainfall surplus of 61 percent in Ropar, 54 percent in Tarn Taran and 42 percent in Gurdaspur was recorded, as per the data with Met Department.

The Met official said that this is the last spell of rain during the monsoon this year and the withdrawal of monsoon is expected to be declared by the end of this week.The Met Department has forecast light to moderate rainfall at many places in Punjab and Haryana on September 25. Every year, the monsoon season begins with the onset of rains in June and ends in September. This year, the monsoon had reached Punjab, Haryana and their joint capital Chandigarh on June 28.

Meanwhile, incessant rainfall has led to sharp decline in temperature levels across the region. The maximum temperature dropped by upto eleven notches below normal level in some parts of the region.
