65% wheat sowing completed in Punjab

Chandigarh: Out of 85 lakh acres of area to be covered under wheat crop, 55 lakh acres have already been sown, which is four percent more as compared to sowing in the previous year as on till date, said the state Agriculture Director Jasbir Singh Bains on Thursday, adding that with timely sowing, wheat productivity is also expected to be higher this season. He said that 11,844 direct wheat sowing machines had been provided to the farmers on 50 to 80 per cent subsidy, which could sow wheat crop without tilling, and the farmers are taking its full advantage. In all, 25,922 crop residue management machines have been given to farmers on subsidy during last two months.

Haryana police arrests one in drug peddling

Chandigarh: Haryana Police on Thursday arrested a man for drug peddling and seized 400 gram opium from his possession near Nathusari Kalan village in Sirsa district. The accused identified as Mahender Singh, a resident of Rupana Bishnoiyan, was booked under NDPS Act, and would be taken on remand by producing him before the court. 

presentation on smart transport system in Shimla

Shimla: FDDC and Bureau Group Company Limited, a Chinese company, gave a presentation before Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur on Thursday regarding providing smart alternative transport system for Shimla town. The Company detailed about providing smart transport such as mono rail, ropeway, lifts and escalators etc for the town. Education Minister Suresh Bhardwaj, Power Minister Anil Sharma, Transport Minister Govind Thakur, among others were also present during the meeting.

 NGT for waste segregation at source level

 Chandigarh: The National Green Tribunal’s Regional Monitoring committee (North Zone) chairperson Rajwant Sandhu on Thursday asked the Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh (MCC), for strictly enforcing segregation of waste at house level in Chandigarh and penalise the bulk generators for violations. Sandhu visited the waste management project sites, managed by MCC along with MC Commissioner KK Yadav, and MCC team. She also reviewed solid waste management system in Chandigarh where she was briefed about waste collection, transportation and its disposal.

Chandigarh Airport launches retail operations

Chandigarh: Chandigarh International Airport Limited (CHIAL), Three Vee Marketing Private Limited, along with JLL, India’s leading real estate professional services firm, on Thursday announced the launch of retail operations at the airport. The launch is part of CHIAL’s efforts towards enabling customers to have access to and shop from around 50 latest global and Indian retail brands. The retail operations were launched by Airports Authority of India chairperson Guruprasad Mahapatra along with senior officials from Three Vee Marketing, JLL and various brands.

Punjab VB nabs head constable taking Rs 30k bribe

Chandigarh: Punjab State Vigilance Bureau on Thursday nabbed head constable Mukhtiar Singh red handed while accepting bribe of Rs 30,000. Singh, posted at STF Ferozepur, was nabbed red handed on the complaint of one Mangal Singh of Chapati village in Ferozepur district who had alleged that the accused police official was demanding Rs 50,000 to help him in a complaint case and the deal was struck at Rs 30,000. A case under different sections of Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against Singh at VB police station Ferozepur and further investigation was under progress.

BBMB’s lecture on modern dam safety concepts

 Chandigarh: Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) on Thursday organised a lecture in modern dam safety concepts and sustainability delivered by a senior dam and earthquake expert Dr Martin Wieland, who is the chairman of Committee on Seismic Aspects of Dam Design, International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD), Zurich, Switzerland. Dr Wieland was also the chairman of Earthquake Committee of the Swiss Dam Society, besides being a senior dam and earthquake expert at Poyry Switzerland Limited in Zurich, Switzerland, wherein he has been involved in the seismic safety evaluation of some of the world’s largest dams and other major infrastructure projects.

Gurdaspur Coop Society’s two officers suspended

Chandigarh: Punjab Cooperation Department on Thursday ordered suspension of the services of Deputy Registrar of Gurdaspur Cooperative Society Bhupinder Singh and Inspector Bhupinder Singh of Shahpur Jajan circle’s Cooperative Society over bribery allegations. Disclosing this, the state Cooperation Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa said that the Secretary of Athwal Multipurpose Agricultural Cooperative Society Heera Singh had levelled bribery allegations against both officers. He made it absolutely loud and clear that a policy of zero tolerance towards corruption would be adopted and guilty would be strictly proceeded against.

Punjab VB nabs BDPO red handed

Chandigarh: Punjab State Vigilance Bureau (VB) on Thursday nabbed a Block Development and Panchayat Officer (BDPO), posted at Lohian in Jalandhar district, red handed for accepting Rs 10,000 bribe. BDPO Gurmeet Singh Kahlon was caught on the complaint of retired Panchayat Secretary Manmohan Singh who alleged that the BDPO was demanding Rs 30,000 to release a usage certificate (UC) regarding development grant issued to the gram panchayat Nihaluwal and the deal was struck in three instalments.
