Karan Singh wants Sita’s statue beside that of Lord Ram

Friday, 14 December 2018 | PNS | Lucknow

A day after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced the setting up of a statue of Lord Ram in Ayodhya, senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member Dr Karan Singh wrote to Yogi requesting him to also put up a statue of Goddess Sita alongside at Ayodhya.

In his letter, Dr Singh said that he had visited Simariya in Mithlanchal last week that is the birthplace of Goddess Sita.

“Goddess Sita got married in Mithlanchal and thereafter went to Ayodhya. But she had a short stay there and went to 14-year exile with her husband Lord Ram and brother-in-law Laxman. After her return, she again stayed for a short while at Ayodhya and again went on exile after getting pregnant.”

“Looking into these facts, it would be better that a statue of Goddess Sita is also set up besides that of Lord Ram in Ayodhya. Her statue could be smaller in dimension but she definitely deserves the honour,” Dr Singh wrote in the letter which was released to the media in Lucknow on Thursday.

The UP government recently announced to set up a 151-metre tall statue of Lord Ram on the bank of Saryu river at Ayodhya. Soon after the announcement, several religious gurus opposed the move, claiming that the idols of gods and goddesses should be inside temples where people could perform puja.
