Khadi Board, Jharcraft ready to makeover school uniform

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popular dictum ‘Khadi for fashion, Khadi for nation’ may soon have an extended version – ‘Khadi for fashion, Khadi for nation, Khadi for school goers’!

In the first of its kind attempt, students attending over 40,000 government schools functional across Jharkhand will soon get a Khadi uniform as the two nodal agencies of the State government are set to redesign their dresses giving a whole new identity to the kids.

Soon after the announcement of Chief Minister Raghubar Das who said that his Government was drafting a plan to supply Khadi-made clothes to school as part of an expansion idea to popularise this indigenous product in Jharkhand, State Khadi Gramodyog Board, Chairperson Sanjay Seth and Jharcraft MD Manjunath Bhajantri during a press meet on Sunday unanimously gave their consent to supply uniforms to the government schools made with the fabric.

“There is a big market for Khadi products in Jharkhand. In the wake of the recent announcement of the CM, both Khadi Board including Jharcraft have done their preliminary exercise and we are all set to start the work in accomplishing the project of supply Khadi uniforms in each government school,” said the Khadi Board Chairperson.

Under the plan, Jharkhand State Khadi and Village Industries Board and Jharcraft will work jointly enroll Government schools on their respective boards for Khadi school uniforms for their students and accordingly the supply will be made to each school in a time-bound manner.

“Considering the engagement of women workforce in Khadi industry, this specific endeavor will not just give thrust to the cottage industry waiting for revival across the State but will also aid in making the Khadi a household name. The project will start this year, if things fall in place,” Seth further asserted.

Meanwhile, Seth further said that efforts are being put to start the Khadi Park in Dumka district on or before August 15, 2019. Interestingly, the much awaited park will have a training center, a production unit including a Gandhi museum. “The Khadi Park at Dumka is being designed with State-of-the-Art facilities. Spread over acres of land, training of sewing, spinning and other specialised designing methods will be taught to the trainees there,” said Seth.
