Delhi Customs officials on Monday claimed to have arrested a 45-year-old man at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport for allegedly trying to smuggle foreign currency worth nearly Rs 96 lakh into the country. According to customs official, the accused was intercepted on Saturday when he was proceeding to board a flight to Dubai.
“The man was stopped by customs official and a detailed baggage and personal search of the passenger resulted in the recovery of $58,400 and Euro 65,100 equivalent to Rs 96.2 lakh which the passenger had concealed in the falls of sarees (being carried by him),”said the custom official.
“We have seized the forex and the accused is arrested under the provision of section 104 of custom act. The accused had disclosed that he had smuggled foreign currency amounting to Rs 80 lakh during his past two visits adopting the same modus operandi,” said the custom official.
