Memo demands Mukti Mandap rights

Tuesday, 25 September 2018 | PNS | PURI

A memorandum on behalf of the Mukti Mandap of the Jagannath Temple was handed over to Supreme Court-appointed Amicus Curiae Gopal Subramanium on Saturday stating to take this seat of the pundits into confidence in the reform process of the temple. It demanded revival of the rights the Mukti Mandap has lost over the years in the temple.

While many of its rights to rituals have already been encroached by the servitors, some are remaining unpracticed these days, the memorandum informed.

It further stated that since the Mukti Mandap is the highest advisory body on rites and rituals, hence it be given much priority in the reforms of temple in order to get its prestige back. The demands include Seva Nos. 8, 9,10 and 15, which are Puja Panda Seva, Badapanda Seva, Puspalak Seva and Palia Mekap Seva, respectively.  Earlier, these Sevas were in the hand of the Mukti Mandap. However, later, it lost to the Sevayats of the temple, cited the memorandum.

Urging Subramaniam for actions against the Mukti Mandap Pandit Sabha, the memorandum stated that a parallel body registered under the Society Act, 1860 is quite un-maintainable since it is unconstitutional in the temple traditions. Citing statements of temple administrator Mahimohan Tripathy way back in 1994 that the decisions and directives of Mukti Mandap Pandit Sabha are not at all mandatory upon the devotees, it urged Subramaniam to ban the parallel body in the temple.

Notably on September 10, the Mukti Mandap had given a memorandum to the three-member Reform Committee in demand of the rights, besides a ban on the Mukti Mandap Pandit Sabha.
