New sugar mill project to start by Mar 31 next in Punjab

Punjab’s oldest cooperative sugar mill at Bhogpur to get new lease of life with the commencement of a new modernised sugar mill project by March 31 next having 3,000 TCD (tonnes of cane per day) capacity and producing 15 megawatt (MW) power.

Announcing this during a review meeting at Punjab Bhawan concerning the project with all the stakeholders including the higher officials of Sugarfed, Cooperative sugar mill Bhogpur and the Uttam Energy company on Tuesday, the state Cooperation Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa said that the oldest cooperative sugar mill of the cooperative sector in Punjab has the capacity of 1,016 TCD.

“It would see the setting up of a new sugar plant of 3,000 TCD capacity and would also produce 15 MW power. Out of this, about 8.5 MW would be sold to the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited,” he said.

The meeting thoroughly debated every aspect of the technical as well as the financial nature with regard to the project. The Minister also said that prompt action within a week has been ordered pertaining to the decisions taken during today’s meeting.

Randhawa said keeping in mind the interests of sugarcane farmers hailing from the Gurdaspur and Batala regions, ultra modern sugar plants would be set up at Gurdaspur and Batala which would also produce ethanol and power alongside sugar.
