No point of questioning national integrity of any student, says DGP

Days after the Kashmiri students studying in Punjab’s educational institutes were nabbed for having links with the terrorists, the state Director General of Police (DGP) Suresh Arora on Sunday maintained that there was no point of questioning the national integrity of any student, especially from Kashmir, by the Punjab Police.

“It is our duty to ensure access to quality education to every student from any part of the country,” said Arora while interacting with media persons on the sidelines of 59th Police Commemoration Day parade.

At the same time, he made it clear that in case any sort of violation of law is done by any citizen of the country, law would take its own course.

Notably, as many four students from Kashmir, studying in Punjab’s private institute, have been arrested by Punjab Police for alleged links with terror outfit — Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind on October 11-12.

Apprehending arrests, many Kashmiri students studying at various colleges across the state started returning home to the valley fearing harassment and arrest, alleging that the police were profiling them by asking them to fill “forms” through college administrations.

The forms entitled “other students database” asks for details like full name, date of birth, gender, father’s name, address, contact, Aadhaar detail, date of admission and a photograph to be pasted on the supplied data sheet. Kashmiri students were also being asked to intimate the police before going on leave and also on returning.

As per reports, as many 40 students of the CT Institute of Engineering Management and Technology alone have proceeded on leave.

“I have already passed on directions to district police chiefs to have detailed interactions with the students studying in educational institutes and assure them that the Police was there to assist them in case of any difficulty,” said Arora while insisting that there was no question of alienating students from any part of the country.

State DGP said that Additional Director General of Police (Community Policing) Ishwar Singh and Inspector General of Police V Neerja have been appointed as nodal officers to redress the grievances, if any, of the students. “The students can contact both these officers in case of any problem,” he added.

Responding to another query, Arora said that the nefarious attempts being made on social media to misguide the youth would be dealt with sternly. “The same attempt was made during the dark days of years 1984-1994 but the youth should not fall prey to such tactics. Rather, the youth must contribute generously in social and economic development of the country in general and state in particular,” he said.

Earlier, addressing the gathering, the DGP recalled the Punjab Police’s stellar role in preserving the state’s hard earned peace besides safeguarding the unity and integrity of the country.

Arora also hailed the Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh’s decision to restore the special family pension of the officers martyred during operations against the terrorism. “The families would get full pension, instead of that cut in year 2014, along with the facility of Red Card. Punjab Police would ever remain indebted to its illustrious heroes, who brought laurels for the Police force through their gallantry deeds,” he daid.
