The average monthly income of a farmer family in the State was Rs 4,976 against national average of Rs 6,426 in 2012-13 agriculture year as per the 7th round survey of the National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) conducted in 2013.
Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment Minister Pradeep Maharathy informed this in the State Assembly in response to a question of BJP MLA Dilip Ray on Tuesday.
During the year, a famer family’s monthly average income in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal and Jharkhand was Rs 5,979, Rs 5,177, Rs 3,980 and Rs 4,721, respectively.
A farmer family’s income is basically calculated from sources like agriculture, wage, livestock and non-agriculture. A peasant family in Odisha earns Rs 1,407 from agriculture source, Rs 1, 716 from wage, Rs 1,314 from livestock and Rs 539 from non-agriculture source per month, according the Minister.
In national level, a farmer household’s average monthly income comprised Rs 3,081 from agriculture, Rs 2,071 from wage, Rs 763 from live stock and Rs 512 from non-agriculture source. A farmer family’s monthly average income was highest at Rs 18,059 in Punjab followed by Rs 14,434 in Haryana and Rs 11,888 in Kerala. Other States who are ahead of Odisha in respect of famers’ average monthly income include Assam (Rs 6,695), Gujarat (Rs 7,926), Karnataka (Rs 8,832), Madhya Pradesh (Rs 6,210), Maharashtra (Rs 7,386), Rajasthan (Rs 7,350), Tamil Nadu (Rs 6,980) and Telangana (Rs 6,311).
