PM to inaugurate first multi-modal terminal on Ganga river in Varanasi

Saturday, 10 November 2018 | PNS | Lucknow

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be visiting his parliamentary constituency for the 15th time in the last four and half years on November 12 when he lays the foundation stones and inaugurates projects worth over Rs 2,400 crore for Varanasi and its adjoining areas.

During his visit, the PM will inaugurate an inland port/multi-modal terminal constructed at Ramnagar. He will welcome a ship container, named Ravindra Nath Tagore, from Kolkata at the port.

The PM will also visit the Kashi Vishwanath temple corridor where he will inaugurate the first phase of renovation.

Around 50 road crossings in the city have been cleaned and during the PM’s visit, diyas (earthen lamps) will be lighted for their beautification. rangolis will also be made by various women’s organisations at the roadside to welcome the PM, Bharatiya Janata Party general secretary Vijay Bahadur Pathak said.

The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) disclosed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would dedicate to the nation two important national highways in Varanasi, having a total length of 34 kilometres and constructed at a cost of Rs 1,571.95 crore.

Modi will be accompanied by Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik, Union Road Transport and Highways, Shipping, Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Minister Nitin Gadkari and UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

The function will be held at Ring Road trisection, Hardua in the afternoon.

The 16.55 km Varanasi Ring Road (phase-I) has been constructed at a cost of Rs 759.36 crore, while 4-laning and construction of 17.25 km Babatput-Varanasi road on NH-56 has been completed at a cost Rs 812.59 crore. The roads have been constructed by NHAI under Bharatmala programme.

The Babatpur highway will link Varanasi with the airport and go on to Jaunpur, Sultanpur and Lucknow. With a flyover at Harhua and a ROB (rail over bridge) at Tarna, the road will reduce the travel time from Varanasi to the airport.

The Ring Road, with two ROBs and a flyover, will ensure free movement traffic on NH-56 (Lucknow-Varanasi), NH-233 (Azamgarh-Varanasi), NH-29 ( Gorakhpur-Varanasi ) and Ayodhya-Varanasi highways by bypassing Varanasi city, thereby reducing traffic congestion.

In a separate event the same day, the Prime Minister will dedicate to the nation an inland waterways terminal on the river Ganga in Varanasi.

This is the first of the four multi modal terminals being constructed on NW-I ( River Ganga) as part of the World Bank-aided Jal Marg Vikas project of the Inland Waterways Authority of India.

The other three terminals are under construction at Sahibganj, Haldia and Ghazipur. The project will enable commercial navigation of vessels in the river Ganga.

The Prime Minister will also receive the country’s first container consignment to be sent by an inland waterways vessel. This consignment, containing cargo of food and beverage company Pepsico, set on sail from Kolkata in the last week of October.
