Police begin probe into video clip

Monday, 15 October 2018 | PNS | Dehradun

After the opposition and other critics of the State Government attempted to corner the State Government based on a video of industrialist Gautam Adani purportedly criticising the State Government while meeting Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat, the police are probing a complaint lodged by the Information and Public Relations department regarding a news report on this brief video that had gone viral on the social media.

The complaint was lodged recently against a news portal for distorting information in the video which had been released by the department after Adani’s visit to Dehradun last month.

It will be recalled that on September 26, ahead of the investors summit held on October 7-8 prominent industrialist Gautam Adani had visited the Chief Minister’s residence where he had met Rawat and officials concerned. The information department had issued a Press release and brief videos of the meet.

Later on, a news portal had uploaded the video purporting that the industrialist was criticising the Government in the presence of the Chief Minister. Recently, Information and Public Relations department assistant director Ravi Bijarniya lodged a police complaint on the behalf of the department’s director general.

In the complaint against a news portal, it has been stated that the brief video clip was used as the basis for putting up a false news report.

According to department sources, whereas Adani had said that the industrialists come in favour of the Government, the word favour had been distorted into fear to purport that the industrialist was talking of investors arriving in the summit for fear of the Government.

Further, the said video had not been leaked but had been released by the department itself shortly after the industrialist’s visit to the Chief Minister’s residence, added the sources.

The police will analyse the video clip forensically to ascertain facts of the case.

It should be mentioned here that shortly after the clip and report were put up on the portal, the clip vent viral on the social media. It was then cited by the opposition to criticise the State Government on infrastructure and other governmental aspects.
