Police intensify crackdown on bootleggers, nab 15

Saturday, 17 November 2018 | PNS | Gwalior

Since the Assembly elections were declared, the business of the bootleggers have started booming as never before. The lethargic attitude of the police and the excise officials coupled with the fact that a section of the lower class prefers to resort to illicit liquor for emotional and related issues have been the major factors for the flourishing of this illegal business.

The excessive demand during the election season guarantees massive profits and the quick returns in bootlegging have attracted even small time crooks to this business.

However, with the stern stand taken by the Election Officer, the police and the excise department have begun arresting bootleggers and monitoring liquor stocks in shops and bars.

In separate cases, the Police confiscated 18158. 8 litres of liquor valued at Rs  72, 63, 789.00 during the last few days and   arrested fifteen people. Most of this liquor was being carried in mini vans and in some cases SUVs.

In comparison only 20 % of this amount was impounded in the preceding five months.

According to the police and the Excise officials, the system of liquor supply works very shrewdly. The bootleggers hire a number of drivers and inter-change the drivers from the point of origin to the point of destination so that is difficult to get a clue about the entire chain. In some of the confiscated vehicles, the authorities found GPS system also. Surprisingly most of the drivers who were arrested were unaware of the materials they were carrying inside the vehicle.

According to reports, the police in a series of raids in the suburban areas of the city have also destroyed large quantities of wash, a substance that is used to make illicit liquor.

In a separate case the police also arrested three arms suppliers following a tip off. The police are interrogating the illegal sellers to ascertain their local connections.

On instructions from the top brass the police and the excise personnel have intensified picketing at all the entry points to the city.
