The Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Raj Babbar's move of removing majority of party headquarters staff by forcibly retiring them or terminating their services met with resentment for the first time in Lucknow on Wednesday.
The UP Congress' frontal organisation, Sewa Dal, organised 'kanya pujan' at the party's state office to mark Durga Ashtami.
While Babbar was busy in 'kanya pujan' at the Mall Avenue state office on Wednesday afternoon, female members of terminated or sacked staff staying on the campus gheraoed him and raised slogans against him.
They accused the UP Congress chief of unnecessary harassment. They were irked that Babbar not only sacked their husbands, but to get their accommodations vacated on the office campus, he also got their power connections disconnected on Tuesday.
The agitated women claimed that they had been living on the campus for the last several years and had also being paying the electricity bills but Babbar was unnecessarily harassing them, to force them to leave the campus.
Faced with the awkward situation, Babbar preferred to slip out of the party headquarters even when a programme of Sewa Dal to honour girls was not over.
Sources claimed that Babbar planned to get the headquarters campus vacated by the staff families as he wanted to construct a new multi-storied building to house a meeting hall and offices of different frontal outfits.
Putting aside the ruckus, state Sewa Dal spokesman Rajesh Singh 'Kali’ said, "Kanya pujan is a tradition observed by Hindus on Durga Ashtami and the Sewa Dal has been following the tradition for the last so many years. Durga puja reminds us of women power and its importance in Indian culture. We should pledge to respect women not only during Navratri but every day."
