SP gets into action mode for LS battle

Sunday, 23 September 2018 | PNS | Lucknow

Samajwadi Party launched preparations for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls in Uttar Pradesh by announcing to hold meeting of polling booth-level committees from October 3 which will stretch till October 9. On Saturday, state SP chief Naresh Uttam directed district units to set up booth committees, if they had not been constituted, by September 25. It is reported that booth committees have been constituted in 225 of the total 403 Assembly segments in the state. The SP brass has asked district officials to prepare themselves for the meeting and inform the state headquarters by September 25.

The party brass has advised that districts can hold day-long booth committee meetings where there are 7 Assembly segments and in those district with more than seven segments, it can be held for two days. Uttam has also asked district/city president and MLAs or former MLAs to make arrangements of loudspeakers and other things for the meetings.

While gearing up for the 2019 polls, the Samajwadi Party is also eyeing rebellion within its ranks as several seats will be ceded to most-probable ally Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).

Apart from internal revolts, the party also braces for another round of clash within the Yadav clan, with disgruntled SP founder Mulayam Singh’s younger brother Shivpal Singh Yadav floating ‘Samajwadi Secular Morcha’ to avenge humiliation meted out to him and his supporters by Akhilesh Yadav.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha poll — when quarters of Samajwadi Party were hopeful of projecting Mulayam Singh Yadav as the PM candidate - the party suffered a shock defeat and was reduced to a paltry 5 out of the 80 seats in the state.
