State issues notification on reservation in local bodies

The State on Sunday issued the notification regarding reservation status for election to the top post in urban local bodies of the State. The notification was issued in pursuance of the orders of the Uttarakhand High Court issued earlier this month for notification of reservation status and holding of urban local body elections in the State.

The notification approved by the Governor Baby Rani Maurya states the reservation status for mayoral posts in seven municipal corporations, posts of chairperson in 38 Nagar Panchayats and 39 municipal councils.

As per the notification, the mayoral post in municipal corporation of Dehradun has been kept unreserved while the mayoral posts in municipal corporations of Rishikesh, Haridwar and Kotdwar have been reserved for women. While the mayoral post in Haldwani has been kept unreserved, the same post in municipal corporation of Kashipur has been reserved for OBC whereas the mayoral post in Rudrapur has been reserved for scheduled caste.

Among municipal councils, the posts of chairpersons have been kept unreserved in municipal councils of Mussoorie, Herbertpur, Manglaur, Laksar, Shivaliknagar, Badahat-Uttarkashi, Joshimath, Narendranagar, Devprayag, Munikireti-Dhalwala, Pauri, Pithoragarh, Tanakpur, Champawat, Almora, Bageshwar, Nainital, Bhawali, Jaspur and Sitarganj.

Further, the post of chairperson has been reserved for women in municipal councils of Badkot, Gauchar, Karnprayag, Chamba, Rudraprayag, Dugadda and Mahuakhedaganj. The chairpersons’ posts have been reserved for scheduled caste in municipal councils of Vikasnagar, Chamoli-Gopeshwar, Ranikhet-Chiniyanaula (SC woman) and Kichha. Similarly, the posts of chairpersons have been reserved for OBC in municipal councils of Doiwala, Tehri (OBC woman), Ramnagar and Gadarpur while the post in Khatima has been reserved for scheduled tribe (woman).

When it comes to the chairpersons’ posts in 38 Nagar Panchayats, 19 have been kept unreserved.

Further, while nine posts have been reserved for women, three have been reserved for OBC, two for OBC (women), three for scheduled caste and two for scheduled caste (women).
