Works Secretary Nalini Kanta Pradhan has sent a list of 99 road connectivity projects to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to be constructed in the Left Wing Extremist (LWE) affected areas with a cost of Rs 921.86 crore.

There will be 97 roads and two bridge projects in the Road Requirement Plan (RRP) II and III, which are implemented in the Maoist affected districts like Malakangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nuapada, Balangir, Bargarh, Deogarh, Sambalpur and Boudh.

The two worst Maoist affected districts such as Malkangiri and Koraput will have a lion’s share in the RRP II. Malkangiri will have 12 road connectivity projects with a length of 142 km at an estimated cost of Rs179.77 crore and Koraput will have 15 such projects with a cost of Rs 63.98 crore. Other 10 Maoist hit districts will have 72 projects having total road length is 594.22 km at an estimated cost of Rs 678.11 crore in RRP III.

While Rayagada will have seven, Kalahandi will get 10, Kandhamal, nine, Nuapada, six, Balangir, 11, Bargarh, four, Deogarh, seven, Sambalpur, seven, Boudh, four and Nabarangpur will have seven projects. All these will have black top roads and improved connectivity in the far flung zones, which are infested by Ultras. Earlier, the State Government has implemented RRP I and RRP II and as the State has been aggressively connecting the roads in the Red Corridors, the MHA is taking increasing interest in the State in awarding more such projects.

Recently, Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi reviewed the progress of the RRP programme. The Union Government has been considering the requests of the Maoist affected States’ request on a priority basis and those are performing well are receiving more funds.

Odisha by completing the Gurupriya bridge in Malkangiri has earned appreciation of the MHA. So in RRP III, Odisha is all set to get funding in a bigger scale.
