In an accident that shocked the national Capital on Wednesday, a 16-year-old girl died and eight other persons were injured when a 65-year-old retired professor from Hansraj College of Delhi University reportedly lost control and his Fortuner car rammed into five vehicles near Meera Bagh traffic signal in Delhi's Outer district.
The accident occurred late evening on Wednesday when a retired professor, one Kamal Kumar Beharai, allegedly lost control of his Fortuner and rammed into five vehicles- a scooty, one motorcycle, one rickshaw and one mini bus before coming to a halt.
According to police, he was driving fast and lost control of the car at the time of applying break.
The vehicle lost its balance and rammed into the vehicles.
The 16-year-old girl identified as Seema Das was walking along with her sister when they were run over by the Fortuner. The 16-year-old died on the spot, and her sister sustained grievous injuries. The deceased, along with eight other, was injured. They weretaken to Sahgal Hospital.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Seju P Kuruvilla said that once the retired professor Kamal Kumar Beharai is discharged from the hospital, he will be taken into police custody. "The other injured persons are out danger," he added.
The vehicle was badly damaged after the accident and was seized for further investigation, police said. Police said they are checking the CCTV cameras installed in the area to understand what exactly happened.
They said they will question Kumar after he recuperates and also ask for his medical test to ascertain whether he was drunk at the time of the accident.
