The 5-day festivity ends

Saturday, 10 November 2018 | PNS | Haridwar

The five-day festivity that started with Dhanteras and ended with Bhai Dooj has given the traders a boom time.  The people going on a shopping spree in accordance with the long-continuing tradition, the shops have seen hordes of buyers thronging them. Interestingly, the astrologers fix the time to go for the purchase for gold, silver and other metals on the auspicious day of Dhanteras. However, the youngsters go for the shopping after they explore the latest gadgets launched in the market on the festive occasion.

According to Vastu Shastra, things purchased with knowledge help align the planets in favour of the buyers while purchasing items not suitable for the occasion  casts negative effects. Prateek Mishrapuri, astrologer and Vastu Shastra expert, said, “It is believed that worship of the goddess Lakshmi and the god Kuber on the Dhanteras day brings prosperity and wealth. This year, Dhanteras came under ‘Hasta’ nakshatra which is influenced by Moon. This is why the people bought articles made of silver and silver-coloured gadgets.” City markets were found brimming with hustle and bustle during the festive season as shoppers thronged jewellery and utensil stores in their hordes.   The youngsters’ choice was, however, different. They remained glued to the attractive offers rolled out on the mobiles. They inquired into the latest models and the festive season discount offers.

Punya Chaddha, a teenager, said, “In a bid to bring home Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, I bought Apple mobile which I had dreamt for long. To me, this is the biggest asset a student can have. Nowadays we cannot imagine life devoid of mobiles. It is my TV, phone, camera, computer, everything, all in one.”

Some went for the gold and diamond-studded watches-the latest in style made by the branded watch companies while those from the middle class families clung to the kitchen items. “Grill and toast combined in one is what I am looking for,” said Shuchi Saini, a homemaker.

Going for the metal stuff remained the craze this time too while they stayed away from the glass items which are deemed inauspicious because of their  link to ‘Rahu’ on the Dhanteras festival. Anil Chadha, a trader based in Roorkee, revealed a shift in the shopping trend. “Earlier, the people used to buy only silver or gold coins while the middle class people restricted themselves to utensils.  But now, the people shop for gadgets like LED TVs, mobiles, health gadgets.  Around 50 advance bookings were placed for LED TV on Dhanteras with the discount offer. Considering the demand, we ordered a large range of TV screens to be delivered on Diwali day,” he said.

Another middle-aged resident V K Agnihotri said, “I bought Fitbit, an electronic gadget with computer- based chip, which works on the manual feed target in synchronization with mobile. Target is set by the user as per his age, weight and profession and it shows steps covered during the day, heart rate, calories burned, stairs climbed by a simple press on a button. The gadget gives information alert about improper activities of our body in terms of weight and calories burned. So it will help me monitor and manage the required optimum parameters for healthy body,” he said and added beamingly, “What could be a better option to stay fit for the whole year as health is real wealth?”
