Two tortoises recovered from poachers

The Gangnehar police team nabbed three poachers and rescued two tortoises from them on late Monday night. A case has been registered under Section 51 of the Wildlife Protection Act 1972. The car carrying the tortoises was also impounded by the cops. The investigation is on, said police.

Speaking to The Pioneer, in-charge of Gangnehar police station Pradeep Bisht said, “During night patrol, our team members tried to stop a car going towards Roorkee. There were three youths in it. As the driver raised the speed the police team followed them. Later, the car was stopped and during the search, two tortoises were recovered.”

The accused trio has been identified as Rajeev alias Raju from Bijnor, Moharram Ali from Laksar and Wazid from village Bakarpur near Laksar tehsil. Their crime records are being investigated, added Bisht.

An Indigo car with number plate of UP11 AK 4581 was also impounded by the police which was used by the youths to transport the tortoises.
