Umesh granted bail, unlikely to be released

Saturday, 17 November 2018 | PNS | Dehradun

Umesh Sharma, the arrested owner of a news channel was granted bail by the sessions court here on Friday. However, his release from the jail is uncertain as the police may produce him in a Ranchi court. On Friday, the court of additional sessions judge (I), R S Khulbe, granted conditional bail to Umesh Sharma.  On the orders of Uttarakhand High Court ( HC) hearing in the court of additional sessions judge started on Friday. The counsel of Sharma pleaded that there is no concrete evidence against him but the police are trying to implicate him by fabricating charges. The prosecution however opposed bail on the grounds that Sharma can influence investigation. The court granted bail on a bond of Rs 50,000 and two sureties and directed that Sharma should not leave the country and help in police investigation.  Inspite of getting bail, Sharma is not likely to come out of jail soon as the police have received a warrant from a Ranchi court in a case of conspiring against the state. The police are most likely to produce Sharma in the Ranchi court.

On the complaint lodged by one Ayush Gaur, Umesh Sharma was arrested in a joint operation of the Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh (UP) police on Sunday from his Indirapuram based residence in Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh on October 28, The police team also recovered cash, foreign currency and equipment used in sting operations. Large number of CDs, hard disks and other things were confiscated from his house. He was produced in the court on October 29 after which he was sent to Jail.

The police sought to conduct Narco test on Sharma but the Uttarakhand HC on Friday ordered stay on these tests and directed the lower court to dispose of his bail application.
