Police foiled the plan of the unemployed physical education teachers to march to the residence of the Chief Minister on Thursday.
Under the banner of Unemployed Bachelor of Physical Education and Master of Physical Education Federation, the youths have been staging a dharna near the Parade Ground in the city for the past many days. Some of the members have also been on an indefinite hunger strike.
On Thursday, as the agitated members of the federation were out to march to the CM residence in support of their demands the police stopped them once they took out the march.
Some members of the federation were also arrested by the police and they were later taken to police lines.
The patron of the federation Himanshu Rajput demanded that the State Government should appoint one physical education teacher in every Government-run school. He said despite the National Council of Education Research and Training having made physical education compulsory for students of Classes I to X, no move is being initiated by State Government to recruit trained teachers for the all-round development of the children.
He said the members of the association are resolved to take their agitation to its logical end. “We would not give in pressure put by the state administration machinery. We would fight relentlessly till the state government accepts our demand,” he warned.
Meanwhile, the health of one of the protesting members of the association Hansa Bisht- sitting on a fast unto death-deteriorated on Thursday. The doctors examined her on the day and advised her to break the fast, given the worsening condition of her health. But she refused to heed it.
