Tension prevailed at Pitala village under the Aska police limits in Ganjam district on Monday as angry villagers set a liquor manufacturing unit on fire in the locality.
Over a hundred villagers, including women, ransacked the liquor factory and set fire to various items, including liquor bottles and containers. The activists alleged that cases of various crimes, including domestic violence and eve-teasing, are on the rise in the area due to rampant consumption of liquor by locals.
The mob also demanded closure of all liquor shops and manufacturing units in the locality at the earliest.
However, no police or district officials had reached the spot till the last report came in.
