Waterlogging, traffic snarls after heavy rain

Tuesday, 25 September 2018 | Staff Reporter | NEW DELHI

Heavy rain in the national Capital on Monday once again  brought traffic to grinding halt in many parts of  the city as vehicles moved at snail’s pace. Massive waterlogging at several placed, shrunk road spaces and thus making it difficult. There were gridlocks at major intersections across  the city.

Waterlogging was reported in Fatehpuri T-point on SP Mukherjee Marg, Rajdhani Park, Mehrauli-Badarpur T-point and Pramod Mahajan Marg.

The breakdown of a truck on Nangloi flyover further caused congestion on the road from Nangloi towards Peeragarhi in West Delhi. It took sometime before the Delhi Traffic Police could summon a crane to tow away the stranded truck.  A tree had fallen down due to the heavy rain near Saket and that caused another traffic diversion. The tree was later removed to ease the vehicular movement on this busy stretch.

As the ferocity of rain increased, the Delhi Traffic Police unit took to social networking sites to inform commuters and motorists. They kept on updating about the volume of traffic on waterlogged roads.

However, people who got stuck in the traffic jam during the peak office hours showed wrath towards the Delhi Traffic Police. “It is surprising and sounds absurd that Delhi Traffic Police can’t manage traffic on an expressway like Delh-Gurgaon at three places — morning Airport flyover to Mahipalpur, evening at old toll plaza location Dwarka turned,” said, Pradeep Mishra, a daily commuter who travels from Delhi to Gurugram.

Rajesh Grover, another passenger from North Delhi said,” Big jam now on sadar bazar road, Delhi cantonment area, no traffic Police, this has become a daily issue of Delhi.”

The weatherman had predicted cloudy sky with moderate rainfall and scattered thundershowers. According to Meteorological Department, “The city witnessed light rain in the morning, as the mercury dipped to 24 degrees Celsius.”
