Bear wanders into hotel that inspired The Shining

A black bear wandered the lobby of the Colorado hotel that inspired Stephen King to write The Shining. Stanley Hotel Vice-President Reed Rowley told KDVR-TV that 300 guests were sound asleep as the bruin figured out how to open the door and climbed over furniture. A front desk supervisor captured video of the romp.

There was no damage, but the furniture got rearranged before the bear walked out of the lower level door. The hotel in Estes Park opened in 1909. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

King wrote The Shining after he and his wife stayed at The Stanley in 1974. The 1980 horror film was not shot there.

Snake slithers into Arkansas school, bites the principal

A snake that turned up in an Arkansas second-grade classroom ended up biting the principal, a former Arkansas State Parks employee. lisa Graves, a second-grade teacher at Hector Elementary School, said she picked up a curtain off the floor of her classroom and found a snake coiled in the corner. Graves sent her students into the classroom next door and informed the office that she needed help getting rid of the snake.

Principal Kara Rohr, a former Arkansas State Parks employee, said she decided to put her wildlife experience to good use and capture the serpent herself. But the snake bit Rohr and latched onto her thumb. Rohr said she wasn’t upset about the bite from the non-venomous serpent and had maintenance workers release it into the wild a safe distance from the school.

A South Carolina school district had to close a classroom last fall when it became infested with snakes. Officials at Ware Shoals High School said the classroom was taken out of use when five snakes were found inside the room in a 10-day period.

Restaurant cites worldwide freakout over french fries

A Maine restaurant says news about the anger surrounding a change in its french fries has reached people all over the world. Bolley’s Famous Franks co-owner leslie Parsons tells the Kennebec Journal, a newspaper in China wanted to try its fries and it received a call from people representing TV chef Rachael Ray.

The Journal had reported the Waterville restaurant faced threats of violence when it changed from crinkle-cut to straight-cut fries in June.

Parsons says the change was a financial decision because crinkle-cut fries required special blades that needed to be bought monthly. She says many people felt as new owners they were changing tradition at Bolley’s, which had served crinkle-cut fries since it opened in 1962. Parsons says despite the criticism “99.9 per cent” of its customers are “awesome”.

Church burglar leaves sorry note after theft

A man who broke into a Connecticut church and stole $3,000 worth of electronics apparently felt enough remorse to leave an apology note. Police have released video of the man they say broke into Mount Olive AME Zion Church in Waterbury at about 1:00 am Sunday and stole cameras, monitors and a microphone used to broadcast religious services. Members of the congregation tell WVIT-TV he also left a note that said “Pray 4 Me!! Sorry brothers. Save me,” and drew a little sad face. Member Craig Smith says some members of the congregation heeded the note and prayed for the suspect at a later service. Police are asking anyone who recognises the suspect to contact them.

Amazin’ frets: Free therapy for New York Mets fans

New York Mets fans struggling with their team’s lousy season now have somewhere to cope besides sports talk radio. An online mental health marketplace is giving free, confidential therapy sessions to Flushing faithful who fill out a form asking for their most difficult moments as fans.

New York-based UMA Health made the offer this week after Tuesday’s

25-4 loss to the Washington Nationals, the worst loss in Mets history. UMA says the lighthearted promotion is meant to bring attention to the important role of therapy. The company says it wants to eliminate the stigma of going to a therapist. The Mets, ravaged by injuries and boneheaded play, are the fifth worst team in Major league Baseball. They are tied for last in the Nl East, 16 games behind the division-leading Phillies.
