The Delhi Police on Saturday arrested two more people in connection with the death of five workers who were forcefully sent to clean the septic tank in Phase 2 section of DLF Capital Greens residential complex in Moti Nagar on September 9.
Both the people arrested are employees of Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL) Company which have a contract for managing the faculty services at the complex. Earlier the Delhi Police had arrested three people in connection with the case.
“We have arrested D N Mishra who is the senior Manager cum property manager for JLL and he was the head for this site from JLL side. Another person arrested is Bharat Raj Verma who is the Assistant Manager (technical) in JLL. Both had close supervision on the operations regarding septic tank and site,” said Monika Bhardawaj, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), west district.
Earlier, Ajay Chaudhary, employed as an engineer with JLL, Digambar, the supervisor who had ordered the men to go into the sewer while the other, Pravin Kumar, owned the firm named Unnati that was in charge of housekeeping at the apartment complex were also arrested by the police.
According to police sources Pravin was also related to Raja, who was one of the victims of the tragedy, while Digambar had been evading arrest by changing a dozen locations.
The fatal accident had occurred on September 9. Apart from Raja, others who died were Sarfaraz, Pankaj, Umesh and Vishal. All five had gone inside a sewer for the first time. They were housekeeping staff with Unnati and had been forced down the sewer by the company, which wanted to save money by not bringing in professional sewer cleaners. All five were put in harm's way without any safety gear. When they were pulled out, only Vishal was alive, but he too died during treatment.
A case under sections 304A/304 of IPC , 7 & 9 of Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act 2013, 3(1)(j) & 3(2)(v) of The Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act was registered by the police.
