With concentrations of pollutants (Particulate Matter 10, 2.5, sox and nox) increasing, Environment Minister Imran Hussain has directed the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) to deploy marshals. Taking cognisance of present situation, the Delhi Government has now deployed marshals in council and 272 municipal wards.
Hussain has written to the Environment and Forest Departmentdirecting it to immediately depute environment marshals.
The environment marshals, who are usually Home Guard jawans, have been tasked to stop people from burning garbage, dry leaves, plastic and other waste materials while also stopping them from creating dust pollution.
Before deployment, the environment marshals are also given training to effectively go about their jobs. The burning of waste, plastic and dry leaves in the open, along with dust pollution at construction sites, are banned in city.
“The Environment Department has deployed 83 environment marshals till September for repored incidents of violation of environmental laws and orders issued by the Delhi Government from time to time for taking preventive, corrective and punitive action againstthe violators,” Hussain stated in a note to the Environment Secretary of the Delhi Government.
