An author by chance

Ravinder Singh, the bestselling author of I Too Had a Love Story, talks to Ayushi Sharma about how a writer needs to find their unique voice to make a mark

Writer Ravinder Singh realised one fine day that writing books is more interesting than writing project plans. So, the small town boy from Odisha moved on to penning stories instead of sticking to a stable 9-5 job, that was boring and killing his creativity.

The writer, who has had multiple bestselling romantic novels, said recently that books in the physical format will not go out of fashion anyday soon.

“Books will always be read. If the question is about platform, then I believe that whatever books had to move on to the electronic version they have already moved. The e-books in this country still has a very tiny percentage out there in comparison of physical books and novels. So I’m not at all worried about the books vs e-books debate,” he said. “At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter for an author. He or she has to write the story, wherever the story goes that’s a completely different thing. I would prefer my story goes out in a book format,” he added. The smell of an old book that is associated with memories will not go out of fashion for true bookworms. But modern day houses, definitely pose a problem of lack of space. And yet, they persist.

The author also shared advice for aspiring writers, in WordsBrew Authors meet organised by BlueRose Publishers on Friday. The vision of WordsBrew was to unite the different real-life narratives of famous and budding writers under one roof. This space endowed the readers and writers with a platform to articulate and explore the different hues of an author’s journey.

He said, “If I have to give them one advice, it would be to get into the depth of the story. Storytelling is a lot more about the anecdotes that happens in the chronological order. There are too many layers to it. There should be a justification for everything. If someone has no purpose, then he or she needs a great story and a very refreshing writing style. It’s fine to get influenced by someone else’s style but copying it exactly as your own is not. Why would someone love to read you, when the original work still exists. I would say develop your own style of writing, that’s the whole idea.”

“I observe a lot, some ideas about the stories that I write are from my own life, what I have experienced in the past. Some are also about the change that I want in the society around. I’m currently working on my new novel about love and friendship, featuring his iconic quartet - Happy, MP, Ram and Rinku,” he said. The book will hit the stands next year.
